New Edition Gull

Fun and Performance All Round

Gull Calypso – now out of production.
The new Gull is now available having been re-designed by Phil Morrison on the hull lines of Ian Proctor.

The New Edition Gull has now been tried and tested for some months and we are pleased to report that it has lived up to the standards previously set by the other versions of this long lived and successful class.

This new Gull has the hull lines of the original hard chinned design that was first draw out by Ian Proctor back in the late 1950’s together with the bilge rail runners and keel that were envisaged.

The skeg feature to the rear of the keel aids the stability of the design and the generous rocker gives a dinghy that tacks easily with very enhanced light airs capability.

The inside of the hull has a stepped floor that raises the crew slightly for comfort and aids hull drainage so that water collects to the rear of the centreboard case. Bailers can be added to aid drainage both on the water and in the dinghy park. The rear section of the cockpit has a sunken floor that will give the helm a good comfortable “sit in” position so that the sailing ability of this design can be enjoyed.

Like the fore going traditional Gull designs this boat can have many extras added for individual tastes and abilities. Centre mainsheets, outboard motor brackets, oars and rowlocks, slab reefing, foresail furling with mooring cleats and fairleads allow the dinghy to suit a wide range of experience and conditions.

Yet the boat has a rear storage facility that will accept a small outboard and there is an area under foredeck for odd items to be hidden away from the elements – again features that have been retained and are the cornerstone to this successful design.

The Gull class also allow a conventional spinnaker to be flown for those more adventurous types that wish to take part in the odd race or just have a busier time whilst sailing off wind.

The dinghy has the low weight that makes single handed launching and recovery an easy possibility yet unlike many similar boats this is built to the specification set by the owner and not by the builder. The colours, level of equipment and control systems are chosen by our clients to enjoy their leisure time to the maximum.

Yet at the same time the Recreational Craft Directive has classified this boat to carry up to 4 adults in category C conditions (Force 6 winds and 2 metre high waves) – testimony to the skill of the original designer Ian Proctor and the modern twist given by Phil Morrison.

This is a boat that can be recommended to the young and more seasoned sailor – a boat to enjoy the water and the sport of sailing.
